Grandma/Mom

I just got a call from my Dad just now.  My grandma who’s living back in Costa Rica had a mild heartattack last night.  She’s okay, but the thought of her passing away just flew across my body.  She was practically my mom growing up, raising my brother and I since we grew up in a single-parent family with the rents being divorced and all.

My Dad and Grandma raised us.  Dad served his Army career, and brought up two boys that followed his footsteps to serve (I’m a commissioned officer in the U.S. Coast Guard and an Academy graduate because of him and my brother, Brian, is finishing up his freshman year at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as I type this up).  Grandma was the stay at home “mom” and made our lunches for school, did our laundry, kept us in line, helped us with our chores, and was ALWAYS there for either of us.

I’ve only gotten choked up talking to my Dad I think three times since I was like 16 years old.  This will be the fourth, I needed to take a minute at work to collect myself….it’s Cinco de Mayo tonight, and people will be out celebrating.  I’ll be out hoping that I get to see her after this upcoming patrol, toasting in my mind to one of the strongest women I’ve met in my lifetime.  I love you abuelita.
